MHHS Senior's Program


Objectives:

  • To provide support to ethnic seniors in British Columbia, in particular immigrant Filipino seniors
  • To help them participate more fully in community life through culturally appropriate approaches, information, language and activities as necessary
  • To establish a drop-in centre for seniors at the Multicultural Helping House where they can be given information and links to resources, which can provide them access to key services relative to their needs and problems
  • To provide senior clients with connection to activities, groups, clubs, community and recreation centres, community organizations and service providers who can understand and respond to Filipino seniors needs and interests

The Senior Program will help:

  • Reduce risk of isolation among seniors
  • Empower them to become active and committed participants in community affairs, and to assume leadership and advocacy roles
  • Provide opportunities to continuously stimulate and develop their physical and mental capabilities
  • Improve their overall quality of life in the country they have adopted as their own

Programs and Services:

  • Monthly "Kapihan" - informal gathering (over a cup of coffee) of Filipino seniors to discuss current events, problems and issues of major interest to them
  • Seniors Brigade - group of seniors who volunteer to provide services such as catering, home cooking, housekeeping, nannying, caregiving, etc.
  • Information and Referral Services - on housing, transportation, medical, finances, recreation, immigration, sponsorship and citizenship, family relationships, caregiving, employment, and other issues and concerns.
  • Damayan Crisis Line - informal counselling services to seniors who need someone to talk to and/or those with emergency problems e.g. death in the family, depression fits, hospitalization, etc.
  • Special Events - such as education and information seminars/workshops, summer picnics, Christmas bazaars, Valentine and Thanksgiving dinner-dance, etc.
  • Application Forms - for bus pass, hadyDART, taxi saver, BC housing, SAFER, sponsorship, passport, etc.
  • Weekly Saturday Activities - such as line dancing, aerobics, Tai chi, and other physical exercises; cooking and baking; choral group; night movies; bingo; etc
